Cotton accounts for 40% of all textile products made each year and responsible for 2.6% of the global water use.
Even your organic cotton T-shirt requires 2700 liters of water to grow — a thirst that’s creating ecological disaster in some areas. One fifth of the global water footprint due to cotton consumption is related to the pollution.
Traditional textile dyeing and finishing processes use large volumes of fresh water.
The World Bank estimates that 17 to 20% of industrial water pollution comes from textile dyeing and treatment. They’ve also identified 72 toxic chemicals in our water solely from textile dyeing, 30 of which are cannot be removed.

Overseas garment workers routinely make less than a living wage, working under extremely oppressive conditions. Apparel workers in Cambodia and Pakistan make $0.37/hr, in Vietnam $0.38/hr, in Sri Lanka $0.43/hr and in China $0.55-0.80/hr. Sweatshops can be viewed as a product of the global economy.
